Help the NHS - Buy common medicines from a pharmacy without a prescription

For short term conditions the local NHS has decided that Over the counter medicines will no longer be prescribed August 2018

We can no longer prescribe some common medicines which you buy at your local pharmacy /shop / supermarket without a prescription.  This is quicker for you and frees up NHS resources for people with serious health problems.  Some of these medicines cost just a few pence.

Examples of what can be purchased without a prescription are:

  • Allergy medicines
  • Simple pain killers like paracetamol and ibuprofen
  • Sore throat, coughs, colds and flu medications
  • Anti-diarrhoea medication
  • Rehydration salts
  • First aid kit including plasters and bandages
  • Thermometer

What does Repeat and Accute prescription mean?

Your Doctor will decide which medicines and appliances to class as Repeat items.

Repeat items will be listed in all these places:

  • on your online account
  • on you Telephone Auto-Attendant account
  • reception can print an up to date list for you

If an item you have had before is NOT listed then your Doctor has decided that it is an Accute item.

Requests containing Accute items may take longer to process and may be refused.  If you have had a Accute item before, please try ordering it online or on the webform using the 'Custom' box - remember to write the reason why you need it.  We will normally try to contact you if the item is refused.

Help your surgery - Order your Repeat prescriptions in good time.

  1. Re-Order your Repeat medicine in good time - within 2 weeks maximum, 7 days minimum of the 'Due Date'.
  2. We will issue prescriptions for Repeat medications within 48 hours (excluding weekends and bank holiday).
    • For example, if your request contains only Regular (repeat) items and reaches us before 16:00 on Monday we aim to have your electronic prescription ready for your pharmacy to download by 16:00 on Wednesday.
    • Requests which  reach our reception desk after 16.00 hours will begin processing the next working day.
  3. Medication ordered too soon, or at the wrong dose, may take longer and may be refused.
  4. Requests which include Accute items might take longer and could be refused - we will normally try to contact you if the item is refused.

Our surgery has a Clinical Pharmacist who manages our prescription process.
